A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO)  is a voluntary group which is non-profit in nature. It can work on various levels starting from local to international levels. An NGO is concerned with the welfare of society and its development. Several issues on which NGO’s work include poverty elimination, awareness programs, health management, literacy improvement, and overall community development. NGOs are open to all those who wish to become a member and serve the society.

Ahmedabad is one of the emerging metros in the country. Situated on the banks of Sabarmati river, it is the largest city of Gujarat state. If you are a resident of Ahmedabad, or just moving in the city, here is a list of NGOs you can volunteer in.

  1. HUMANKIND

Humankind is working for the education of underprivileged children and adults, creating awareness about Right To Education, environment and about Thalassemia amongst youth. It started in 2005 with the motto of educating the dropout children in the slums. Its objective is to create a caring and an amiable environment which fosters all-round development of these children who are less privileged in getting a normal upbringing.

Projects are implemented by a team of experienced social workers and dedicated paraprofessionals, some of whom are former street children who worked their way out of destitution with the NGO’s assistance. The team is gender-balanced and comprises people of various creeds at all levels.

  1. ASHRAY SOCIAL WELFARE FOUNDATION

Ashray Social Welfare Foundation is a non-government organization rooted in philanthropic values for the empowerment of the people in the underserved rural areas. Their efforts are directed in providing the vulnerable sections of the society a respectable life without having to migrate to urban areas in search of livelihood. Their major role is to act as a catalyst to channelize and fine-tune the local skills and potentially available in the rural sectors, redefine them to make them self reliant and self-sufficient for a bright and healthy future.

The mission includes providing sustainable livelihood options, basic amenities, health and medical facilities, training and empowering women and youth, educating children, working on environmental issues, etc.

  1. ROBIN HOOD ARMY

The Robin Hood Army is a volunteer-based, zero-funds organization that works to get the surplus food from restaurants and community to serve less fortunate people. Started in 2014, it had 200 Robins in 8 cities. Now, with over 9 million people served — the army streamlines its processes to set up hyperlocal community chapters across the world.

The idea is to create self-sustained chapters across the world who will look after their local community. And in the process, inspire people around us to give back to this who need it most.

  1. SAATH NGO

Saath (which in Hindi/Gujarati means ‘together, co-operation, a collective or support’), founded in 1989, is an NGO in India registered as a Public Charitable Trust and is based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Saath closely works with the deprived communities and empowers the socially marginalized by providing them livelihood services, and imparting skills leading to employment, health and education facilities. Saath focuses on livelihood services, child rights, human rights, young girls’ education, skill development, and other community services.

  1. VISAMO KIDS FOUNDATION

Visamo Kids Foundation (VKF) is working to make fundamental changes in the lives and thoughts of underprivileged children in Gujarat by providing them with free education, with the hope that they will, in turn, upgrade their families and society. It started with 18 children from poor families of earthquake-affected regions of Gujarat. VKF manages a home that provides lodging, boarding, and education support to 95 underprivileged children. Every year, 10 kids from deprived families gain admission into Visamo at the age of five years and stay at this home till they complete Grade 12. VKF provides medical aid, counselling sessions, academic supervision, guidance, and frequent parent-child interaction.
